Barbus fasciatus, Glühkohlenbarbe

In the south of the Indian subcontinent the age-old Deccan plateau is situated, which was formed already in times when India was still a part of Africa. Many rivers and brooks run from there directly in the Indian Ocean. In many of them endemic varieties/subspecies/species of freshwater fish have developed due to the geografic isolation. This is especially true for the barbs and loaches. Most of these endemic forms have never been researched by scientists. A typical member of the freshwater fish community of that region is Barbus or Puntius fasciatus, the Melon barb. For this species all the things mentioned above are applicable to. Many colour varieties exist in the different rivers. Most wanted in the hobby are the red varieties, but there are also yellow and orange ones. Currently we have very beautiful wild collected ones in stock, which have a brilliant red basic coloration. The males litterally seem to glow from inside. The Melon barb becomes around 8 cm long and is completely peaceful. Like all barbs it nibbles on soft parts of plants when it is not fed properly by the aquarist with vegetables. They are undemanding regarding water chemistry and should be kept at temperature of around 26°C. A kind of "winter rest period" at lower temperatures (18 - 22°C for 6-8 weeks) is very positive for the fish´s health, but this is not indispensable. Text & photos: Frank Schäfer
