Notropis lutrensis

The Red Shiner originates from North America from southern Illinois to South Dakota, Kansas up to the Rio Grande. This fish is suitable for the unheated aquarium or fish pond although in winter he might not survive deep frozen ponds and should be removed before the winter gets on its way. This representative species of the carp family is a non-demanding schooling fish, which is a lively swimmer, and need therefore accordingly a good amount of tank space. Besides space the water should be clear and well aerated and regular water changes are a must in order to keep the Red Shiner in good condition. The male fish have brighter colouration and during breeding season can be easily distinguished by a white cloudy secrete on the head. This beautiful species is omnivorous and will take all available life and frozen food. Vegetarian food should be available regularly and also flake and tablet food will be taken eagerly. A school of these fish will be an everlasting joy to watch your coldwater fish tank or garden pond.(Photo: Frank Schäfer, Text: Izaak den Daas)
