Copella meinkeni

6. July 2007

At present Aquarium Glaser can offer some species of splash tetras, noticeable by a magnificent colouring is particularly Copella meinkeni. Each scale of these up to 6 cm long getting species is marked with a red spot. C. meinkeni origins from areas north of the Amazon, where it occurs in the basins of the Orinoko and the Rio Negro. There they tolerate very soft and sour waters, in aquaria however they can be kept in middlehard water at neutral pH values. They inhabit the middle and upper zones and can be socialised with other calm South American fishes. At spawning season the males show a stormy courting behaviour bringing then action in the aquarium. They spawn on floating leaves direct under the water surface. They were already bred in tanks, the raising of the fry seems to be problematic, since they can master only very small food.(Photo F.
