Dario hysginon “Black Tiger”

26. July 2019

We have the cute Flame Red dwarf badis (Dario hysginon) quite regularly in the stock. It originates from Burma (drainage of the Irrawaddy, Myitkyina District, Kachin State). More pictures of this species can be found here: https://www.aquariumglaser.de/fischarchiv/dario_hyginon_2__en/

Together with the Flame Red another dwarf badis occurs in nature, which is already mentioned in the scientific original description of D. hysginon: the “Black Tiger”. Regarding the measurable values, the Flame Red does not differ from the Black Tiger and therefore both are currently regarded “officially” only as color variants of the species Dario hysginon. Aquarium observations speak however for the fact that two separate species are concerned, because they do not interbreed in the aquarium.

Unfortunately, it is impossible to assort the two forms in fright coloration. Fully coloured animals, on the other hand, are hardly to be confused. By the way: the females of the Black Tiger have, exactly like the males, a spotted pattern in the neck, through which one can distinguish them quite well from striped females of the Flame Red.

In our current import of Dario hysginon are unusually many Black Tigers included – very pretty animals!

For our customers: Dario hysginon has code 413783 on our stocklist. Please note that we cannot sort Flame Red and Black Tigers and only supply the wholesale trade.
