Barbus cf. callipterus

6. July 2007

This strongly at Barbus callipterus reminding barb reached us from the tropical west Africa. Whether it is a variant of the Clipper barb B. callipterus or a near related species could yet not be clarified. The further information refers to the general maintenance conditions of bigger barb species. They are social swarm fish, which should be held at the best in schools by at least 7 individuals. They prefer well – planted tanks (> 80cm) with open water for swimming. For the socialization further peaceful, active fish are suitable. Concerning their food barbs have usually no excessive requirements, but as other fish they like an occasional addition of frosted or living food to the commercial flake food diet. One is then often surprised, what energy is in a swarm of barbs, if e.g. living water fleas are offered to them.(Photo F. Schäfer, Text K. Diehl)
