Discherodontus ashmeadi

6. July 2007

The redtail barb Discherodontus ashmeadi originating from the tropical Southeast Asia can reach an overall length of up to 14cm. As habitat Mekong and Meklong are indicated. In their appearance the dark dorsal fin mark, as well as the strongly red markings of the caudal fin are particularly noticeable. In their habitat they inhabit brooks and rivers with clear water, a moderate to strong current and a gravel to stony bottom. There they occurs near decaying plant debris where it feeds on insects and other invertebrates. Active swarm fish of this size need roomy aquariums, a meter tank should it for a swarm already be. For the socialization robust representatives of the asiatic fish fauna are suitable. Particularly the representatives of the genus Botia or other barbs will do fine.(Photo F. Schäfer, Text K. Diehl)
