March 2006: The mandarin crab, a further still undefined Geosesarma species, reached us these days from Sulawesi. It is characterised by a very intensive red-orange colouring of the legs and particularly the claws as well as bright yellow eyes. Thus it represents a beautiful coloured contrast to the last week introduced vampire crab. Whether a socialization of mandarins and vampires is possible is not known, because both species are new in the hobby. In any case they place very similar requirements and in a larger tank it should be possible, particularly since they achieve with a length of approximately 3 cm the same size. A well planted terrarium with a water part and climbing areas made of cork, pieces of bark and roots or bogwood can be arranged very decorative and graces each living room. The crabs moving therein as multicoloured spots are attractive eye catchers. We wait for further new imports from this group, since from the estimated approx. 200 species of fresh water crabs from Southeast Asia only a small part arrived so far in the trade.(Photo F.
