Labeo barbatus

6. July 2007

As a further new import from the Congo we can present you Labeo barbatus. It is a about 60 cm growing representative of the genus Labeo, which is represented in the Congo River with at least 34 species. In its habitat it lives in sections with strongly flowing waters. About its behaviour in aquaria little is known, thus here one enters new ground. Since Labeos generally become more aggressive with increasing age, a good structure of the aquarium is meaningful. Thus territory borders have to be offered and retreat areas for suppressed individuals to be created. For this purpose bogwood, stones, bamboo, plants etc. are suitable. Against food and water chemistry they usually place no high requirements, they must be naturally sufficiently fed and the water filtered accordingly. Fishes of this size and vivacity need very roomy aquariums and do not belong not into the hands of beginners.(Photo F. Schäfer, Text K. Diehl)
