Brittanichthys myersi

6. July 2007

This interesting, rarely traded characin species origins from the Rio Negro area. B. myersi is a genuine black water fish, which should be kept best at pH values of 4,5 – 6 and a very low water hardness. A filtering over peat can be very helpful, apart from the improvement of the chemical parameters the bactericidal effect of the peat reduces also the bacterial pressure in the aquarium. Unnecessary activities in or near the aquarium should be avoided, since this small, maximal 4 cm large getting preciousness is very sensitive to stress. This also is to be considered at the socialization with other fish, only similar small, reserved species should be taken. During acclimatisation they should be fed with small living food (Artemia Naupliae), frosted food is also accepted and a conversion to flake food can be tried. About a successful breeding no reports are present to us, but there are indications for an internal fertilization.(Photo F. Schäfer, Text K. Diehl)
