If you’re looking for a dwarf cichlid that doesn’t have the relatively high water quality requirements for breeding—unlike many Apistogramma, Dicrossus, and other species—then Amatitlania nanolutea is an excellent choice. This dwarf cichlid from Central America (the Atlantic side of Panama) never grows larger than 8 cm and lives and spawns in virtually any standard tap water. They are very colorful fish. The females can be recognized by the large spot on their dorsal fin. Both parents care for the spawn and guard the young together. They are essentially typical relatives of Cichlasoma, just in miniature.

Maximum size: approx. 8 cm; Temperature: 22–28°C; pH and hardness: not significant for care and breeding (tap water); Diet: omnivorous; Social behavior: best kept in pairs; the pair should be able to form naturally from a group of juvenile fish.
