We recently highlighted the Striped Headstander (Anostomus anostomus) and mentioned that this sought-after species—which is rarely available as a wild-caught import—can now also be obtained as captive-bred specimens from Indonesia (https://www.aquariumglaser.de/en/fisharchive/anostomus-anostomus-4/).
Now, for the first time, we have also received large captive-bred specimens (8–12 cm) from Indonesia. These are truly beautiful fish! Unlike the wild-caught specimens we most recently sourced from Guyana, the caudal fins of the captive-bred fish are just as red as the dorsal fins. Unfortunately, we do not know where the original broodstock from the Indonesian breeders originated. Overall, A. anostomus is very widely distributed in the wild; scientific records exist from Brazil, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Colombia, and Suriname. Red-tailed Striped Headstanders are known, for example, from Suriname.
Maximum size: approx. 16 cm; Temperature: 22–28°C; pH and hardness: not significant for general care (tap water), but soft and acidic for breeding; Diet: Omnivorous, with plant-based supplements important; Social behavior: Schooling fish with a social hierarchy.
