Since 2007, a very attractive Chaetostoma from Peru has been imported sporadically. The species exhibits extremely variable markings, so much so that it has even been assigned three L numbers. Its defining characteristic is essentially the head region, which is patterned with large white spots. All three L-numbers exhibit this coloration, while the pattern on the flanks (often with broad, vertical stripes) and the color of the caudal fin (sometimes deep red) can vary greatly. Other trade names for the species have included Chaetostoma sp. “Tiger,” C. sp. “Zebra,” C. sp. “Cuzco,” and C. sp. “Pisqui.” It is native to tributaries of the Rio Ucayali.
Chaetostoma sacramento is a good algae eater for slightly cooler aquariums with strong currents. The color variability is partly also an expression of sexual dimorphism. The very colorful individuals are males; females are significantly more plain in color. Chaetostoma species are highly adapted to life in oxygen-rich, flowing waters and require very good water quality. Unlike most other armored catfish, their ability to take in atmospheric air for auxiliary respiration is virtually nonexistent. The fish spawn in caves, and the male guards the clutch until the fry hatch.
Maximum size: approx. 8 cm; Temperature: 18–24°C; pH and hardness: not important for care (tap water), but for breeding, the water should be soft and not very acidic; Diet: filter feeder; Social behavior: peaceful sucker catfish that forms a hierarchy with conspecifics.
