The checkerboard cichlid Crenicara punctulata is relatively widespread throughout the upper Amazon Basin. There are reports of its presence in Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Guyana, Colombia, and Peru. The photos show specimens from Peru.
Male Crenicara punctulata grow to about 12 cm in length, so they are no longer strictly speaking dwarf cichlids. However, since this species is very peaceful, this is not a significant issue. Crenicara punctulata is one of the very few species of freshwater fish capable of true sex change. As far as is known, all C. punctulata are born as females. If there are no males in the tank, the strongest female transforms from a functional female into a functional male. This phenomenon, which is very common among coral fish, is called protogynous hermaphroditism.
Caring for C. punctulata is easy. However, it is important to provide the fish with a large area of fine sand, which they constantly search for food. C. punctulata is an open-spawning species that forms harems; thus, a male mates with several females and guards the territory, while the females are responsible for the eggs and fry.
Maximum size: Males approx. 12 cm, females significantly smaller, 6–8 cm; Temperature: 22–28°C; pH and hardness: not important for general care (tap water), but soft and acidic for breeding; Diet: Omnivorous; Social behavior: Peaceful cichlid that forms a social hierarchy.
