Danio albolineatus

21. August 2026

The pearl danio (Danio albolineatus) is a true classic in the aquarium hobby. The species is native to Southeast Asia (from Burma to the Malay Peninsula and further east), but it has been bred in aquariums for over 100 years, and wild-caught specimens are almost never available in stores. This completely peaceful danio is a perfect fish for community aquariums. It has no special requirements regarding water or food that even a beginner in the hobby of aquarium keeping couldn’t meet. You should simply do yourself and the fish a favor by keeping them in a school (of at least 10 individuals). The gender ratio (females are rounder) is irrelevant, but you should try to have at least two males in the group. That way, you can wonderfully observe their courtship and threatening behaviors. When planning the stocking of a community aquarium, plan Danio albolineatus for the upper third of the tank, as that is where they prefer to swim.

Maximum size: approx. 5.5 cm; Temperature: 18–28°C; pH and hardness: not important for care (tap water); Diet: omnivorous; Social behavior: peaceful schooling fish.
