Danio dangila

2. October 2026

The type species of the genus Danio—that is, if you will, the true Danio—is Danio dangila. For a long time, it was considered unique, as its coloration differs significantly from that of most other Danio species. In 2015, Kullander focused his research on this fish, coining the term “chain danios” for species such as Danio dangila that have a lateral pattern resembling chains; he also described new species from this clade.

The true Danio dangila, native to India, Bangladesh, and Nepal, is found throughout much of the Ganges and Brahmaputra river basins. It can be readily distinguished from other, very similar species by its particularly large shoulder spot, which is vertically oval (while it is circular or horizontally oval in species with which it may be confused). The elongated first rays of the pectoral and pelvic fins are also quite species-specific; this characteristic is otherwise only found in the closely related D. annulosus from Bangladesh.

The coloration of these fish is quite extraordinary. In addition to the chain-like pattern, there is a band along the back that resembles a finely chiseled Damascene pattern. Danio dangila is a wonderful addition to community aquariums with larger fish; much smaller tankmates are viewed as food. It must be able to swim freely; then you will derive great pleasure from this fish.

Maximum size: 7–8 cm; Temperature: 18–28°C; pH and hardness: not significant for care and breeding (tap water); Diet: omnivorous; Social behavior: very lively schooling fish.
