Geophagus iporangensis Show Size

14. August 2026

We have received magnificent Geophagus from the brasiliensis group. The smallest specimens are 15–20 cm long, while the largest are well over 25 cm. “True” G. brasiliensis of this size develop a large forehead hump. Even in the largest males, this hump is only faintly visible. This is why we classify them as Geophagus iporangensis. However, we are also aware that the taxonomy of the Geophagus species in the brasiliensis group has not been thoroughly studied. The designation “Geophagus brasiliensis” would therefore also be possible.

Maximum size: approx. 25–30 cm; Temperature: 16–28°C; pH and hardness: negligible (tap water); Diet: Omnivorous, requires hearty food (frozen food, cichlid sticks, etc.); Social behavior: Assertive cichlid, heavy burrower, open spawner with biparental care.
