Pethia setnai

7. August 2026

Pethia setnai is the mainland Indian (Goa, Western Ghats) counterpart to the black ruby barbs (P. nigrofasciatus and P. bandula), which are found only on the island of Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, it is very rarely available in the trade. These are beautiful fish that, once fully acclimated, display a distinctive violet-blue color not otherwise found among barbs.

Maximum size: approx. 6 cm; Temperature: 22–28°C; pH and hardness: not critical for care (tap water), soft and acidic for breeding; Diet: omnivorous; Social behavior: peaceful schooling fish.
