The Malili Lake System on Sulawesi (formerly Celebes) is the source of some truly spectacular shrimp, snails, and clams. Five lakes—three large and two small—make up this system: Matano, Towuti, Mahalona, Lontoa, and Masapi. We have now once again succeeded in importing one of the fish species endemic to the area, namely (most likely) Telmatherina bonti. Identifying Telmatherina species is a highly complex matter, which is why we cannot be entirely certain. But there is strong evidence that we have imported T. bonti. Like many Malilian silversides, this species is polychromatic, meaning that both males and females occur in various color variations. In T. bonti, there are yellow, white, and yellow-white individuals. In the wild, they occur in a colorful mix and also interbreed. They are therefore by no means distinct breeds or subspecies. The purpose of this polychromatism is unknown. Our current import contains only yellow specimens.

In the aquarium, T. bonti—which can grow to about 8 cm in length—are very peaceful and lively fish. They are easy to care for, provided you keep in mind that the water in the Malili Lakes is always relatively warm (approx. 28°C) and its pH level is always above 8. Both conditions should be replicated in the aquarium. They will eat any dry or frozen food. Spawning takes place among fine-leaved plants. The fish are continuous spawners. Telmatherina bonti captivates with its lively nature and constant courtship displays. It never gets boring to watch a school of these fish—and with this species, it should always be a school!
Lexicon: Telmatherina: from the ancient Greek “telma,” meaning “swamp”; Atherina is another genus of silverside. bonti: named after the local name for the species, “bonti-bonti,” at Lake Towuti.
