The range of small, peaceful catfish from Asia is significantly smaller than that from South America, but there are certainly some. Moth catfish (Hara, Erethistes) for low-flow aquariums and wasp catfish (Akysis) for tanks with more current are enjoying increasing popularity.
Akysis get their name “wasp catfish” from the most famous species, Akysis vespa (https://www.aquariumglaser.de/en/10-catfishes/10e-catfishes-from-asia/akysis_vespa_en/), whose sting from its venomous pectoral fin spines is truly very painful. But the other species can also deliver a nasty sting, so caution is advised when removing them from the tank. However, these small catfish never actively attack! On the contrary, they are very peaceful, both among themselves and toward fish of other species.
Akysis prashadi is native to Burma, where it is endemic (i.e., found only there) in the tributaries of Lake Indawgyi. Caring for them is straightforward; they readily accept any standard fish food. When given the opportunity, the fish like to burrow into fine sand. Akysis are egg-layers and do not care for their young. Due to their origin, these fish can be kept very well at room temperature; the temperature should not exceed 25°C on a sustained basis.
Maximum size: approx. 6 cm; Temperature: 16–25°C; pH and hardness: not important for care (tap water); Diet: omnivorous; Social behavior: peaceful, can be kept individually or in groups.
